Some Of The Best Dads....
#1. Tevye in “Fiddler on the Roof.”
Tevye in “Fiddler on the Roof.” Although steeped in tradition, Tevye (Topol) learns to bend with the times to ensure his daughters’ happiness. Tevye can milk a cow and sing at the same time — nice qualities in a dad. There’s always music in his house. If he were a rich man, his family would live in splendor, but they easily make do with what they have. He is a realist and a survivor.
Father’s Day gift: A day without sorrow, a night without fear.
#2. Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover) in “Lethal Weapon.”
Roger goes through hell for his kidnapped daughter, but refuses to break because that would mean letting her down and crushing the rest of his family. He’s a family man before he’s a cop or a partner.
Father’s Day gift: A desk job. Until then, Valium.
Some With Caveats....
#3. Henry Jones in “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.”
Henry (Sean Connery) gives his son survival skills, teaches him everything about archaeology and helps him fight Nazis. But he’s absent a lot, he’s a tough taskmaster and he puts his son in life-and-death situations. On the plus side, he’s Sean Connery, for god’s sake.
Father’s Day gift: The picture of Dorian Gray.
#4. Fred Waitzkin in “Searching for Bobby Fischer.”
After becoming a kind of stage father to his chess-prodigy son, Fred (Joe Mantegna) finally gets it about being a supportive dad and letting your kid be a kid. The caveat: He’s intense and slow to catch on to what’s important in life.
Father’s Day gifts: The board game Life and a box of Life cereal.
Never Should've Been A Dad. Dads..
#5. Jack Torrance in “The Shining.”
Ax-wielding Jack (Jack Nicholson) wants to turn his son into kindling.
Father’s Day gift: Kindling.
#6. Darth Vader in “Star Wars.”
Wheezing Darth (James Earl Jones) severs his son’s arm.
Father’s Day gift: A new inhaler.
